Stackable, Embedded Microcredentials

Students and employers increasingly sought short-form credentials aligned to workforce needs, yet few models integrated these effectively within degree pathways.
At APUS, I was tasked with developing a strategy that would enhance employability while preserving academic momentum toward degrees.
What We Did
As Provost and SVP, I led the development of embedded microcredentials that could serve both learner needs and academic integrity.
I led the development of the NanoCert® program—stackable, embedded microcredentials aligned to both employer demands and degree curricula. We launched career-focused NanoCerts in cybersecurity, intelligence, and education, embedded within existing programs, and designed for completion within 8–12 weeks.
Result
The NanoCert® initiative increased enrollment, enhanced student satisfaction, and created a scalable model that helped working adults earn workforce-ready credentials without losing ground on their academic goals.
